An initial movement toward an instigating sound or visual cue, with an electric moment of surprise as the sensory input is gathered.
As a viewer, i find it more appealing to feel engaged (empathising) with the character to see the reaction of the face and eyes.
I think keeping this in mind can strengthen the story telling. And also increase the power of moments when a character disconnects from the audience (broken empathy - may be good for a villain, or to increase a sense of loss).
A double take?
